Because I married in. Because... unless the shot you take can't miss, there isn't much you can do but abide. It started with positive reinforcement, with encouragement, incentives, until it wasn't enough and they wanted more.

( He didn't come here to garner sympathy for his and his husband's plight (or his husband's past), but this is the direction she asked about. )

Standard mob wife territory. I've been threatened. My family has been threatened. When they discovered David and I wouldn't just leave each other - and they attempted to bribe me - then they made me a company man. You want to know why I'm here? Because I'm the problem child and you were punishment. You're not in danger, they're are no post cure-post doppelgänger rituals. It's like, you were president and now our tax dollars are being put toward watching you. Granted, the Colony discovers something new every day, but if I thought for a second your body or your blood wouldn't be your own, I would've come forward sooner, Elena.

[While she wants to feel like she could trust him, part of her isn't so sure, or at least hesitant (12). She's sympathetic to their story. She can't say she hasn't found herself in similar supernatural extortion situations. But, fool her once, shame on her. Fool her twice ... well, still shame on her.

She folds her fingers around her coffee mug and grips it tightly, trying to make sure she chooses her words in a way that isn't isolating.]

I want to believe you. But in the venn diagram of people who lied to me about who they were, and people there to protect me and have my best interests at heart, there haven't been a lot of people in the middle.

( Too little, too late, he realizes, but, he's done his apologizing already. )

Isn't the reason behind the lie as important as the lie itself?

I do what I do for the Colony because like my parents', David's are the highest up there. They aren't just the upper echelon, they're it. And they are who had their son possessed when he was just a teenager.

[She was specific. She said "lying about who they are." Yes, everyone lies, but when you have a doppelganger who liked to pretend to be you at the drop of a hat and screw with your life, you take that particular kind of lie a bit personally. Never mind what Shane and Hayley did to Bonnie and Tyler, or any of the other countless con artists who have come to Mystic Falls over the years.

Even her relationship with Stefan couldn't survive when she saw how far his mask slipped.]

I'm not unsympathetic to that.

[If this is their real story - which she will confirm with what David may have told Bonnie - then it's certainly points in their favor.]

But it's not just going to magically be what it was again. Some things need to be rebuilt.

[She takes another long sip of her coffee before setting it down.]

I think this is a good start, though.

[The door's open, just a crack. But if things keep going their way, there's a chance things will be better open again.]

I'm not expecting things to return to the way they were. For starters, you've now met my husband. We'll never have the invisible man mystique.

( He cracks a smile. )

You have to admit, I had the mysterious "what does he do after hours" thing going.

There were definitely questions of if this was a "husband named Albert who lives in Vancouver" situation.

Her name is Alberta, she lives in Vancouver.

[Her best friend was a theater major, she knows the drill.]

Exactly. I'm glad to know that he is in fact a real person and that you guys really are happy. I hope you're happy?

We're happy together.

( There wouldn't be a PSL if everyone were happy altogether, now would there. )

[No there wouldn't. And that's the part that matters to Elena, anyway. The world was always going to bring it's drama. It's important that the relationship is solid.]

Elena, I know nothing I said today changes anything. But, I did owe you an explanation.

( not according to the Colony, but what the Colony doesn't know won't hurt them. )

I feel like we're on more even ground now, at least. Hopefully we'll be able to figure it out from here.

( Inevitable last words, as they will probably lie again. But, he tries. )

[But unless there's anything else, she's going to finish her coffee and head home to her bestie, head heavy with questions that she hopes Bonnie can answer.]

( Their summit has pushed their friendship forward, for better or for who knows, but it needed to happen. There's nothing else at the moment as he lets her go and invites his husband out for a later dinner if he's free.

Bonnie is on Elena's couch, an open bottle of wine sitting in front of her, whatever she was watching on mute. As the door opens, she pours the second glass and holds it up to Elena as she enters. )

Hey, how was your day?

It was good. Long, but good. I actually cleared some of the air with Ezra.

[She takes the glass of wine before going to sit next to her friend, tucking one leg under the other as she sits.]

Though I am curious. How well do you know David?

[moralitypolice]

Not well, but, well enough. He helped get my magic back. Bela spoke both highly and strangely of him. He's - an acquired taste.

( Tentatively, they are allies. )

I'm getting that. And given some of what Ezra told me tonight I could understand why.

[She leans back against the couch.]

If what Ezra says is true, his parents had him possessed when he was just a kid.

Had him possessed?

( She grabs her glass of wine hugging it close. She repositions, resting her legs under her. )

Yeah. That's what Ezra said, anyway. I don't know how or why but when he and Ezra met, Ezra had to exorcise him.

[Elena shakes her head.]

The more I hear about the Colony, the more I already strongly dislike them.

They cursed generations of witches, voluntary possession of their first born - it's not shocking.

( Except, it is. Maybe it's not surprising. )

Bela wasn't wrong about how dangerous they are. It makes sense why David might be working toward his own ends. Why he could help us with the twins.

[She nods, taking another sip of her wine.]

I want to trust him. Them. And I really hope we can. I just ... I'm nervous. We know how bad these things have gone in the past.

[moralitypolice]

So, we trust them just enough until they prove us otherwise. You're right, we have been tricked before, and lied to, and hunted. ( And been the hunter. ) David is our only lead.

[braveandstupid]

[She nods.]

I don't know him as well as you do. But if you think we can trust him, I trust you.

[She'll always trust Bonnie. They've been burned together, and she doesn't think that Bonnie would put her in harms way.]

Just be careful with him, okay? I want you to be safe too.

I think he makes friends, and I think he's the least shady witch in a coven of shade.

( She hopes, anyway. )
