[Lindsay is well aware that Watchers are not babysitters. They are vital pieces of the Slayer organization, part of the many checks and balances designed to keep Slayers safe and make sure they have the tools they need to fight the forces of darkness and all that stumble across their path.
Lindsay can’t help but feel like she’s being assigned a babysitter though.
She sits in the Grille, fingers drumming against the table as she resists the urge to text Buffy again pointing out that she really doesn’t think she needs a Watcher. It seems like it’s just a bunch of vampires. She can more than handle a bunch of vampires. She doesn’t need an old white British guy (no offense Giles) watching her every move like she was an idiot who didn’t know what she was doing.
Still, she waits, eyes glancing to the door every time it opens, her own assumptions being the reason why she glances over Beck the moment he walks in.]
[Las Vegas is where all exiles from the Slayer organization go to lick their wounds, apparently.
Not that Lucia minds, exactly. She and Xander were not what she would call tight, but he’s good at his job and she could foist the weird shit she doesn’t want to deal with on him. Magical artifacts? No thank you. Those are ticking time bombs waiting to happen and she doesn’t want them in her house.
So, when the vampire nest she’s clearing out has a stash of weird stuff she doesn’t really think she should touch, she snaps a picture of the loot, before sending it over to Xander:]
Think these might be magical. Want to take a look?
[Elsie Alston was never supposed to wake up again.
She knew that when she stood on the roof of her family home trying to do something to stop the magic that was tearing her apart. Nineteen years old, and she knew that everything had to end. She hopes that Jack will forgive her for it.
When she does wake up, the pain is gone. But she’s also not at Cheetam. She sucks in a gasp of air, and surges into a sitting position, scrambling on the ground. She then braces herself for the pain that feels as though it’s tearing her to shreds—only the pain doesn’t come.
She feels almost normal. Almost whole.
Very tentatively, she waves her hand in a delicate circle and glowing baubles of light spring from her finger tips. It’s so easy and painless she wants to cry. Might already be crying, actually.
She’s about to try and test another spell when her glowing lights land on another body lying nearby. Frowning, she pushes herself up to move closer.]
[Elena has been trying not to be pushy when it comes to the kids. She calls and they FaceTime and they talk, but it’s not the same as spending quality time with them in person. She understands why they chose New Orleans over Kansas.
But her Christmas adventures have had the hospital being a little less lenient with when she can take time off and the peds attending that would normally cover her requested a family vacation three months ago. She can’t really justify slipping away for a weekend in New Orleans for her birthday.
So time to ask and see if they’d be willing to come see her. The other complication being that Damon’s birthday is within a few days of hers, but given that she’s the one with a real job and Damon’s lifestyle is a little more flexible so it can’t hurt to ask, could it?
So, while standing in the kitchen waiting for her coffee to brew on her day off, she pulls up her phone and calls Damon.]
[Six months of breathing room has been good for Ben.
He and Dean have hit an even keel, in terms of staying in touch and rebuilding their relationship. Dean’s been spending more time back in Kansas and on the road, but they’re talking and that’s what matters. Therapy has been helping too.
As for what Dickerson was offering, Ben finds himself opening more to the idea. He hasn’t done anything about it, yet. Hasn’t made the move. But he’s found himself thinking about it more and more, which is progress.
Now, however, he’s waiting at the bar for Dickerson to arrive, on the phone with Elena as they solidify the plans for a few weeks from now, but as he spots his friend coming in the door, he shifts to end the call.]
[Mia and Zoe get into New Orleans late the day before the bachelorette party and spend most of the early morning sleeping off the time change. Fortunately, Lindsay decided on an evening event for her bachelorette so that gives her some time to go and meet Josh and Aiden for lunch.
Leaving Zoe coordinating something for her father that couldn’t wait until she was back from vacation, Mia steps out onto the streets of New Orleans and makes her way to the bistro Josh recommended when they arranged this trip. It’s been almost a year since she’s been back in New Orleans, and the last time she saw Josh and Aiden it had been a sea of blood and fighting hunters.
It’s nice to see them in a slightly more social setting, even if they still have serious things to talk about.
She lets herself into the bistro and spots them at the table, making her way over with a smile.]
[The bachelor party is meant to be low key. A quiet night on Rosseau’s upper floor that still allows them a view of the stage below. Mostly because all of Colm’s other ideas were shot down. Clearly his brothers don’t know how to have fun.
But this also the first time all of them have been together in the same room for quite some time, so they’re going to take advantage of it while they have it.
Evangeline comes up with another round of beers, and Bairre takes his, and turns it in his brother’s direction raising it with a smile.]
To the man of the hour. Congratulations, Beck. You’ve landed yourself a hell of a girl.
[Lindsay is a very particular person. She likes what she likes and she does actually really like her job. Give her a mystery to solve, and she’s happy as a clam. She has spent the past six months planning her wedding, it’s less than a week away, and so she is going to have some good, old-fashioned, Lindsay engineered fun.
So they’re going to a murder mystery party.
Lucia studies the outside of the meeting room where they’re heading, before looking back at the man of honor that made all the arrangements.]
[The ceremony room is tastefully decorated with beautiful flowers, with chairs set in rows leading down the aisle. Those with an discerning eye might notice the discreet wooden stakes slipped between the chairs, or in the flowers, just in case.
This is a Slayer’s wedding. Most of the Slayers themselves will likely be armed, but she doesn’t want any of the other guests left in the lurch.
Freya makes note of them as she makes her way in, dressed tastefully for meeting some of Damon’s friends, his brother. She’s certainly not expecting for the audience to be made up of people she knows—specifically her brother and his wife, sitting on the groom’s side of the aisle. She did remember that Camille’s cousin was getting married.
She just didn’t expect it to be the same wedding.
Before finding her seat, she makes her way to the side, and amused smile crossing her lips.]
[Lindsay has been waiting for months for this moment. To have gotten through the wedding planning and the dress shopping and the vendor negotiations and even the ceremony itself to a certain extent and to make it to the moment where she’s actually married, and she’s certain of what her life is going to look like for the rest of her life.
And as she and Beck slide out onto the dance floor for their first dance, she lets herself be pulled into his arms and flashes him a smile as everything else fades away.
Not her father, not her sister, not the vampires who tried to crash the day. Just him.]
[After herding the girls plus Cole to their table, Bairre’s hand finds Niall’s shoulder. If their tables were closer, he’s sure that Bradan would probably prefer to handle this himself but since Lindsay had put the twins on the other side of the room, so Bairre steps up.]
Hey, are you alright?
[The realization of the supernatural can be a lot, and he doesn’t know how familiar Niall was before all this.]
[Zoe is here on two missions: to have a good time at this wedding, and to fish out Mia’s dirty little secret. Mia, who is currently sitting at the other end of the table talking to Hope, and clearly not interested in letting Zoe close out that mission.
She waits, until Mia steps away to get a drink of her own, before she slides in to take her friend’s place.]
[Granted, Lucia and Laz hadn’t really needed fancy. They just needed their family. Connie catered the whole thing, and they had a small ceremony at a church with a receptionin Connie’s backyard. Hannah flew in from London with her business partner, Felicity got time off work—even Avery was there.
She had to take comfort in the fact that Avery would be home soon. They would figure out how to deal with Elton when the time came, but for now, he’s safe. Now is the time to focus on the wedding and having fun.
As they arrive at the table, she glances over at Dawn as she settles into the seat next to her.]
Hey, does this qualify for our annual “Lucia is alive and not running herself off a cliff” check-in?
[Dawn gives a mock gasp, placing one hand over her chest. “And deprive me of enchiladas? Never.”]
[Bradan doesn’t like that he’s been put all the way across the room from the rest of his family. He knows that Lindsay did her best to fit people where she needed to, but he looks across the room to where Bairre is talking to Niall, and knows with a stomach churning certainty that a conversation he’s been struggling to figure out how to start.
In the end, he forces himself to look away. As he turns to the table in front of him, he tips his head to the side as his eyes land on Serena.]
[Simon follows Xander’s lead to the table. He’s been spending most of this wedding following Xander’s lead, as these are his friends, but he can’t help but worry if Xander has more reasons to be concerned than he original let on.
As such, he avoids the looks from the people who he does know are Xander’s people—Willow and Giles respectively—and turns instead to the well-dressed couple sitting next to them.]
Simon Torquill. A pleasure.
[“Scarlett O’Hara. My husband, Rhett.”
Simon blinks, before nodding.]
It’s so wonderful to know that after five hundred years and change, there are still things that can surprise you.
[Toby usually tries not to be this dramatic. But when such a large group of those she needs to deliver summons to happens to be in one place, she’s going to seize on the opportunity. As she walks onto the dance floor, the smell of copper and cut grass rises around her and with that, everyone not on her list freezes in place.
Then, she steps forward and speaks.]
I am sorry to interrupt the festivities, and I do promise that all of them are fine. I just have a message I need to deliver.
[She lifts her hands, and a series of envelopes sealed with red wax rise and flie into the hands of those on her list: Lindsay, Beck, Damon, Scarlett, Rhett, Stefan, Buffy, Faith, Mia, Dawn.]
[Some things, no matter where you are or what dramatic confluences happen on your life, never change.
One of those things is Stiles and Isaac.
In defense to Stiles and Isaac, this particular outing was not their idea. This was Cora and Bonnie, who do, unlike their boyfriends, get along, wanting to spend some time together and deciding to make it a double date. Cora, having known two of the three attendees longer than Bonnie has, should have foreseen the inevitable bickering that was to follow, but she foolishly thought that if they had an activity, they might be able to keep it to a minimum.
She was incorrect.
Possibly because the activity they chose was trapping the four of them in an enclosed space to solve a puzzle.
As such, Isaac and Stiles are across the room, debating the solution to one of the clues, while she and Bonnie are going through the desk part of the set, and when Bonnie asks of Stiles and Isaac are always like this Cora winces.]
Yeah, pretty much. I don’t really know why though.
Promise we’ll be quick. I just have to check on them.
[Danny slides the key into the Ford twins fairly upper class flat, and lets both him and Lizzie inside. They have plans for this evening—plans that do not necessarily involve cat sitting—but Danny got delayed with coven business before he was done for the weekend and had to sneak over to feed the cats dinner.
He flips on the lights, and turns back to her as the door closes behind them.]
We’ll feed them and then we’re off for our actual anniversary plans.
[It’s been six months since Rusty DeBrande has been on anyone’s radar, and for that entire time, Donna Paulsen has been blowing up his mother’s phone.
Scarlett hadn’t said anything at first—in fact, she intended to outright ignore them for as long as possible, but as she got increasingly irritated, Rusty was able to get Scarlett to come clean. He told her to continue to ignore Donna’s called, and that Rusty would deal with it when he was ready to. He can’t imagine what Donna could want that is so important, but Rusty figures it’s a problem he can kick down the road.
But, now, he does happen to be in New York City. He has plans to have dinner with Melanie and her new beau, and it even happens to be in the area of Donna’s law firm. So he figures he could pop in, see what she wants, and deal with it.
As he wanders past the front of Donna’s office and finds it empty, however, he frowns. Then he glances over his shoulder and spots Harvey.]
[Leandra Martinson used to be an investigative journalist. Now she’s a podcaster.
It feels like a downgrade, but in some ways it’s a boon. She has more flexibility, less overhead. She doesn’t have to worry about how many ads the paper is selling and whether the content she’s writing goes alongside the brand’s image. Now, the brands that are courting her know what she’s about.
It’s a relief in some ways, and still frustrating in others, because with the loss of the paper does, in some ways become a loss of credibility. She’s a podcaster now. That means something different than a journalist.
But she also knows that she can’t stop digging, which is how she’s staying focused on her latest case.
(She doesn’t know that this case is actually a haunting, not just a murder. Fortunately, there is someone who does.)
What she doesn’t expect, however, is to open her door and find Asa Azuma on the other side. Especially considering they’re competitors in a lot of ways. It’s for that reason that her greeting isn’t a friendly one but more:]
