One time, while they were trying to protect Hope from something, Elijah had the bright idea to compel away his memories of his family, because they weren't supposed to see each other while they were housing four pieces of an ancient witch spirit that wanted to possess Hope for herself and use her to destroy the world, probably.
It really did a number on his relationships with his family, and they're honestly still recovering.
