[While Dean and Elena are in the library digging through the physical books, Sam and Allison are tucked into the main room, routing hunters to calls as needed. He and Dean have been trading off, on dispatch and research, especially since Mary and Bobby left on a call yesterday.

It's sometimes good to take a break, but not having research to focus on leaves for a bit of a lull where two people might actually be able to have a conversation. And there's a conversation with Allison that he knows he's been avoiding. He knows that she has questions about the moment he froze on the boat, as well as his hovering, but he's not sure he's ready to have it.

Even for being the Winchester with all the feelings, he still has a hard time talking about his. Allison hangs up with the hunter in question and he tries to make some small talk.]

Anything big we need to worry about?
matriarchate: (tousled listening)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-03-17 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
( She hangs up, shaking her head. )

No, nothing like the Gauntlet.

( For as dire as it sounds, their network of hunters isn't familiar with it. )

The Colony has done good work at keeping it to themselves.

( Considering how volatile it is. And that it feels more like a last resort, like they need to clear the game board completely and start over. Why would they make something like that common knowledge.

Routing hunters is productive. It's a smaller network than she's used to, but it feels like it did when she and her dad were first starting out, when they had to distinguish from Monroe's efforts. It's like flexing old muscles. It also serves as a good distraction.

Allison was on that boat, too. She knew how close the call was. It isn't her first brush with death and it isn't her first death. She hasn't had that talk with Sam, that she and Scott and Stiles gave up whole parts of themselves to help save their parents. That their hearts stopped for hours. She can feel Sam's eyes on her, remembers how he was on the boat, how worried, when he should be focusing on staying alive, himself, and keeping David alive, for that matter. She survived. All three of them survived.
)

Everyone knows to keep an eye out for heightened witch activity, like the kind Caroline and Bonnie stumbled into at the B & B from hell.

( Being playful is easy. )

Other than that, all's quiet on - every front, but I assume that's by design. ( Okay, but they do have to talk about it, right? ) How are you doing?

[They do but Sam still doesn't want to!!

But he sighs eventually, leaning back in his chair because he knows he's not going to be able to avoid it forever.]

I'm okay. I just ...

[He doesn't know how to phrase this in a way that isn't the blunt "all my exes are dead and your near death experiences are shying a little too close to my own personal trauma" because that makes it sound like it's her fault. And it's not her fault. It's just Sam's really shitty luck.]

Things that have happened lately have been freaking me out a little. And I don't want to put it on you because it's very much my issue, but I don't really know how to talk about it.

( Allison will be happy to leave everything unsaid from now until the end of time, but she's done that, and it ends. It always ends. She and Scott left things unsaid because they could and that wasn't sustainable. She and Isaac never truly confronted what they were and she almost died and then their family unit up and recovered in Paris before Allison graduated and took to hunting full time. Poets would never write love stories about her and Isaac and they both agreed that the high stakes of Beacon Hills, close proximity, and hormones did their thing. It got a bit ugly with Allison pointing out all the times Isaac's hormones were in play but when they came back together, she convinced him she knew he felt something. Just because they were young and horny, that didn't mean they didn't like each other. And then she admitted in Scott's arms she told him she loved him.

Suffice it to say, Allison likes putting it all on the table now.
)

I think you should just talk about it, Sam. I promise not to think you're putting it on me.

( And she wants to listen. )

[He takes a deep breath, nodding slowly as he tries to find the words.]

Well, you don't have to worry about meeting any of my exes. Mostly because ... all of them are dead.

[Yeah. That's a good way to say it. Though he's not sure there's a better way either.]

Most died while I was with them, through some supernatural event or other. Except for one, who was okay for a while until one of our enemies wanted to prove a point, so killed long after we broke up and she was married to someone else. And then there was the one that Dean killed, but she sort of used me to start the apocalypse.

[Yeah, Sam's dating history is messy, to say the least.]

I haven't had the best luck with love.
matriarchate: (um really?)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-03-23 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
( She didn't know this was about exes - but it really isn't, is it. It's more about what happened to them, and what almost happened to her. )

And my close-call and New Orleans, that's -- brought everything back up?

( She just wants to follow the thread. )
imnot_likeyou: (i tell myself i'm getting older)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-03-24 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
[He nods as he leans back in his seat.]

And it's not your fault. We have dangerous jobs - I've never not known that it would be a risk and I chose to do this anyway because I want to be with you.

[He'd make the same choice every time, because being with her is worth it.]

Just twice in a short period of time is freaking me out a little.
matriarchate: (quiet vibrancy)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-05-05 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
( She wishes she could say it's freaking her out, too, but she's been doing it so long she's become desensitized. She's still reeling from having to lie to her friends. That hurts more than actually dying. She knows it was the right thing. It being the right thing doesn't make any of it easier. It's the opposite. )

You didn't just choose this because of me. You grew up with it. With Dean, with - your dad. I love - ( she pauses ) that you want to do this with me, that you and Dean are both here and letting me be. I do. ( She takes his hand. ) What can I do to help?
imnot_likeyou: (3)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-05-06 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
[Sam takes a deep breath. He's not sure there's anything she can do beyond staying out of the front lines for a little bit, and he knows he can't ask that of her. Not with what David is asking them to do.]

Just ... be patient with me, if I start getting squirrelly?

[No promises he won't freak out, but a little leeway goes a long way.]
matriarchate: (unhappiness ahead)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-06-26 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Be honest with me and I'll be patient. We're in this together.

( All of them, including Dean and Elena, and pretty soon Caroline and Ryan when they return. Whether they like it or not, they're in the middle of it. )

Remember when our primary directive was shielding and ferrying the supernatural. Now we're waging war against a circle of ancient witches. Remind me to tell you about the first time I cheated death.

( The Oni, the Nogitsune, Stiles. )
imnot_likeyou: (the reason why except it wasn't fair)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-06-27 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
You're not the only one.

[Sam's cheated it a time or two himself - or ten, let's be honest.]

Maybe when Dean and Elena come back to take over the research end, we can swap stories over a couple beers.
matriarchate: (Default)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-08-18 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I will take you up on that offer.

( She covers his hand with hers again. )

Thank you for telling me.
imnot_likeyou: (days and days go by)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-08-21 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for listening.

[Because honestly it does feel good that he can explain something like this and not have it scare them off. It's not going to have him rushing to unload all his trauma anytime soon, but at least it's good to know that if it's brought up it'll be taken seriously.]

I think I need an eye break. Want a coffee refill?
matriarchate: (um really?)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-08-21 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe tea?

( The coffee's really surging through her system hiding out here. And it's good coffee, but at a certain point, it's all she drinks in a day. It's Mary who put out and then refills a pitcher of water when it gets low.

It's only another hour or two before Allison and Sam can go cross-eyed and Elena takes the next shift.

Allison at first, politely accepts a beer handed to her from the fridge, but as Sam grabs a bottle opener she stops him. She likes the bunker and all, but maybe it would be good to get some fresh air? Does he know a bar he and Dean go to? Somewhere with people and music. She wouldn't say no to a dance, either, but how cheesy is that in a small town bar.
)
imnot_likeyou: (and open up their eyes)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-08-22 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, he's feeling the need to get out of the bunker for a bit himself. There's a bar not too far, and it's easy enough to take his brother's keys and drive them over for non-bunker beers and non-bunker company.

It's a fairly simple set up, but there is a small dance floor area with a jukebox and a couple tables scattered around.]

Bar or booth?
matriarchate: (Default)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-08-22 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Drinks at the bar and then we'll find a booth?

( If there's a booth open at least. Seems like a good plan. )
imnot_likeyou: * bobby (a few who'll hold their ground)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-08-23 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Sam nods, using his tallness to help cut through the crowd, before finding two stools together and sliding onto one of them. He holds up a hand to flag down the bartender for beers, and once those arrive, he picks his up with a curious look.]

So...how do you want to do this?

[Especially considering most of his near death experiences were ... actual death experiences.]
matriarchate: (um really?)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-08-23 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
How do we have a conversation about our shared pasts? I was thinking a little give and take, one at a time. Much like the flow of natural conversation.

( She teases, bringing the beer to her lips. )

I was run through with a sword junior year of high school.
imnot_likeyou: (6)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-08-24 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
[He winces at the injury because that's not an easy one to recover from.]

Ouch. I'd ask who was running around with a sword in Beacon Hills, but I think I remember that your grandfather used to carry one.

[Because he was unhinged, in a not good way.]
matriarchate: (Default)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-08-24 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
It was not my grandfather. It was a Japanese spirit called an Oni. A chaos demon had been unleashed, had possessed Stiles, and kidnapped Lydia.

( His plan to this day was convoluted and began and ended with - chaos. )
imnot_likeyou: (and what's past is past)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-08-25 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oni and a chaos demon?

[He makes a face.]

I forget how crazy places like Beacon Hills can be. Usually we're just doing these one-and-done jobs and heading out of town again. It's easy to forget how things can collect over time.
matriarchate: (over glance)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-10-04 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The demon summoned and controlled the Oni. They were a packaged deal at he time.

( But, they also felt more like coincidence as well, as the fireflies led separate chaos-spreading efforts. )

Beacon Hills could've given Sunnydale or Mystic Falls a run for their money. In our case, we had an ancient Druidic tree that drew the supernatural there. The Nematon. Sunnydale had their Hellmouth and Mystic Falls had - ( she shrugs, nothing ancient came up as a sort of Beacon ) interpersonal relations? Did you ever come across a town with recurring incidents?
imnot_likeyou: + text (he says come with me)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-10-05 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Sioux Falls? But that was probably more our fault. We had friends there and we visited a lot.

[Mystic Falls is a strange outlier. For a place that doesn't have a supernatural magnet drawing everyone in, a lot of big magic was cast there. Part of him wonders if there is a nematon somewhere in those woods, but no one's managed to find it.

Maybe, perhaps, that white oak that Esther channeled to make vampires? Thoughts for another time.]

Naturally, trouble decided to follow us, usually because someone was trying to prove a point.
matriarchate: (Default)

[personal profile] matriarchate 2023-10-05 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Naturally. Paving the way for you and Dean to make your own point and save the day.

( Days. )
imnot_likeyou: (sit right down and i'll tell you a story)

[personal profile] imnot_likeyou 2023-10-06 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, our points never seemed to get driven home quite as hard, because they'd just come back and try to do it again.

[Sam rubs his eyes a bit.]

There was this big push for a while to get us to submit to the apocalypse. They mostly took it out on other people because they needed us intact.
