( Points for getting straight to the point. He considers, finishing the last of his beer. )

I drink with people I shoot darts with.

[Kieran doesn't have a problem with that. She won't be drinking-drinking, but she will order herself a mocktail.]

I'll order another round.

[Least she could do is buy the drinks. She gets him another beer and her fruity drink before making her way back to the table.]

Your beer.

Your dart.

( He leans in. )

It isn't even laced with anything. That's more my brother's territory. You first.

( The chalkboard is set traditionally, Kol having scrawled the two first letters of their names before adding an I to one K and an O to the other. Underneath, sit the numbers 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and the word bullseye along a grid. She should recognize you hit every number three times (one line, two lines that make an x, and then it's circled) where the number is then closed out. First to close everything out, wins. )

For every line you draw, you get to pick.

[Fair enough. She picks up the dart and takes aim, deciding to start on the outskirts and with her way in. She aims to the 16 and sends the dart flying and watching it land (16).

She goes over to mark her line and then moves back to sip her fruity mocktail and give him room to throw his dart.]

So I've been ruminating on the magic and vampirism, as you do, and why witches get cut off from magic when they become vampires.
witchaffinity: (you always do this)

[personal profile] witchaffinity 2023-08-18 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
( Kol deliberately doesn't 'aim,' doesn't 'try' with any real Original oomph, but still makes his mark on the 20 (14) / )

And what have your ruminations concluded?

Well, generally speaking it's a no-go, right? Unless, of course, you're a heretic. Because heretics, for some reason, can channel the spell that made them vampires to do magic.

[She waves a hand.]

Complications of being siphoners, I know that's the reason why, but I just think it's so interesting that channeling still works for them. So that made me think about your niece - just as a thought experiment. I'm curious, not stupid - and how she, for some reason, is able to use magic normally by virtue of being the tribrid. But she wasn't a siphoner. It's also not uncommon for wolves and witches to run in the same bloodlines - probably because the original werewolves came from a coven bloodline - so does the fact that she was an activated werewolf before she turned protect her magic?

[She pauses to take a sip of her drink.]

These are just idle thoughts, mind you. But it did leave me thinking that if I compared the magic of say, your blood, against the magic of a heretic or your niece, what answers could I uncover about how that particular rule works? And if I could find something, could we, theoretically, come up with a spell or potion that would allow other vampires who used to be witches to practice magic?
witchaffinity: (chambre doubt)

[personal profile] witchaffinity 2023-08-21 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Because, they had the ability to siphon others' magic and vampires are, inherently, magic.

( Thanks to his mother.

Normally, his eyes would gloss over when lectured in the bar, but she's done her research and he's always had a fascination with witch business and witch science.

His mouth curls at the edges, impressed with her knowledge, eyes wincing at the mention of his niece's turning.
)

I will never be used to the rate at which information travels all these years later. I remember staying one step ahead of my homicidal father, going years without so much as a picture or description accompanying mine or my siblings' names.

( That isn't saying he's not -- intrigued. )

And yet you namedrop my niece in an instance. It's funny how easy idle thoughts tend to become actions. Are you asking me for a sample of my dear niece's blood?

[personal profile] transientem 2023-08-22 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
[She shrugs.]

Only if you think my theory actually has viability. I do want your opinion. I wasn't just trying to butter you up when I said you were one of the most comprehensive sources on magic currently living.

[She knows the stories of Kol and his dark objects, wanting to be close to magic, even if he could no longer perform it. And if she's right, they could both help each other. But as much as she is too smart for her own good, she wants to be right more than she wants to be complimented. If this isn't viable, she'll just have to go back to the drawing board.]
witchaffinity: (admiration)

[personal profile] witchaffinity 2023-08-22 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's never been done before.

( But, that doesn't mean it can't be. His mother is the example set for magical trailblazers as far as he's concerned. Why couldn't he be?

And hey, this isn't a no, either.
)

[personal profile] transientem 2023-08-23 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
There are lots of things that had never been done that eventually were.

[She pauses as she pushes up.]

We don't have to start with Hope, if you need proof of concept. We could look at a heretic first, if we can find one, for a comparative sample.
witchaffinity: (keep safe)

[personal profile] witchaffinity 2023-08-23 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
And, if we find one, we're looking for the willing?

( He takes a moment to sense motive (18), to see just what direction she's coming from, really get a good idea of her intentions beyond curiosity. )
transientem: (15)

[personal profile] transientem 2023-08-24 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Of course.

[He will sense that there's an ulterior motive under all of this - not just pure, unbridled scientific and magical curiosity. But she also isn't out to hurt anyone, so anyone who's going to be roped into this adventure - including Kol - is going to come willingly.]

I'm not badass enough of a witch to make them even if I wanted to. My specialty is bloodwork, nothing actually powerful.
witchaffinity: (casually stands)

[personal profile] witchaffinity 2023-08-24 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
( Has she studied Moroccan and Eastern practices, he wonders, because blood magic can be quite powerful and decision-influencing, but that is a much darker path. And this does feel more personal and scientific. )

Heretics don't grow on trees.

No, they don't. Especially since a bunch of them wound up dead a few years back. But that doesn't mean they don't exist.

[But she has time. She can wait, she can be patient. Her symptoms are manageable and she can still take charge of her life. She needs to believe that if she wants to undertake something like this.]
witchaffinity: (made a mess)

Over a decade ago.

( He hadn't been involved in such a massacre, but stories do have a tendency to travel. )

Where would you go from here? Where does this little experiment start?
transientem: (15)

[personal profile] transientem 2023-10-05 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Presuming that you agree to help?

[Because he is an integral part of the research as he is patient zero.]

I would see if I can track down a heretic. We compare the magic in both of your bloods and see if there's something about the way the vampire spell functions for you that's different for them. If we can pinpoint that, maybe we can replicate it with you and turn you into a vampire who can also do magic.

Probably will need multiple samples, but it'd be a place to start.
witchaffinity: (Default)

[personal profile] witchaffinity 2023-10-05 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Presuming.

( He needs to know if it's going to involve himself. )

What makes you think I want to be a vampire who can also do magic?

( She's really done her research. )
transientem: (10)

[personal profile] transientem 2023-10-06 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
You're kind of notorious for spending all your time around witches. And not in the way Klaus does - Klaus likes to pick up witches when he needs something magical, but you're a lot more consistent. And the grimmoires where you're mentioned are in relation to the magic itself.

[For a guy who doesn't want to be a vampire who's also a witch, he seems to be quite invested in magic.]

But if you don't want to be a witch again, I can go find another vampire.

( He's played coy long enough. He abandons his dart game and takes the two of them out back where he can hear her out directly. He drops all pretenses, intrigued. It's the beginning of a beautiful friendship. )
