( Despite it being a mutual decision between her and Sam, it is not an easy one. She packs, intending to leave in the morning. Dean and Sam are called away by a sheriff friend of theirs and Elena volunteers to keep Allison company and to give her a proper bunker sendoff.
She tells Elena she knows things aren't over between her and Sam, and things have been better since she made the decision. She got squirrelly. And even if a part of her is bailing because it got serious fast, she's not out. She just has obligations. She can only run so much from a secret underground bunker. Sam has his own life and they're all this close to taking on the Colony's parentage.
She needs this. Her and Sam both know it. Elena is encouraging, explaining that there are all kinds of goodbyes. And sometimes they hurt. But that doesn't make them wrong.
They dip into the good scotch and quit their boyfriend talk, because there is no reason they can't pass the Bechdel test tonight, Allison declares! )

( It's no offense to Damon, but the Scottish HQ crawling with slayers of all ages isn't Melanie's scene, even if they "throw the best parties." Damon throws the invitation out during tea. They meet frequently over the next few weeks. He joins her at an art gallery, at a small cafe underneath the room she's staying in, and one evening she even convinces him to go to a rugby match.
Damon leaves the party to his brother, his squeeze, and their entire outfit, and he choose instead to meet Melanie in town. It's been a long time since he's done anything for Halloween, and he thinks the two of them should celebrate it. She dragged him to the rugby game (match, she corrects), so she should join him at the Halloween festival.
Costumes are encouraged.
Damon, always a master of irony, greets her dressed as a swiftie. That's right, Taylor Nation is alive and well (it never died down, never), and her latest tour launched only a month before. (She's performing in Glasgow this weekend, it's all he hears about on TV.) What this means, is he can pull off a simple shite t-shirt (with Taylor Swift phrases written in black marker and LATELY I'VE BEEN DRESSING FOR REVENGE ), adorn his arms with beaded bracelets, and - that's it. He didn't want to go traditional Scottish, nor did he have time to do his Amazon shopping. But, it's fine, because his nieces Josie and Lizzie approved of their uncle Damon's choice. It's a little dated, but retro is always in, Lizzie had said. )
Happy Swiftieween.

( Lizzie only skips two more classes, but they were all different classes and they were all the same week. The week her boyfriend decided he needed to hold up his sacred duties and return to the land of tea, crumpets, and disappointment. She asks him to always tell her that it's raining and he's having a miserable time.
She's kidding. She wants him to embrace his life. She wants him to do what she knows he can. She believes in him so much.
She should probably stop thinking about him constantly. She should probably stop sending gifs and memes.
After a week, she stops smiling through the pain. It's healthier to work on her emotions and work from them, so she starts a gym schedule. She tries to drag Alice whenever she can and their schedules align. She buries her head in the gym, in class, and in studying. She even tries missing a few calls here and there to not seem so available, but then she just ends up calling her boyfriend back five minutes later and all her hard work not trying to seem like an obsessive girlfriend crumbles.
She's been so focused on her test all week, she has no idea what tonight even is. She's in her own world, missing the fact that half of the campus is in costume this morning and she's blasting vintage T Swift through her airpods. She's going through it.
But, the test is done now.
Her room is empty when she gets back. She's done all her homework for the week and it's the weekend. She hasn't done anything on any weekend except phone dates with you-know-who. She quickly sends a text saying she thinks the test went well, but leaves it at that.
She's being too much and boys don't like too much. Music blaring, she doesn't hear her roommate come in, or approach her, so when she tosses her phone onto her bed, she's not expecting it to hit Alice and drop to the ground with a depressive thud. She pulls an AirPod out. )
Oh my god, let a girl know you're here.

( Ezra's anxious energy over the move against Kirsanov has to be funneled somewhere, so he drags his husband to their local gym. He's not good at sitting still. He's good when he has an assignment, or a cause, or a case, but he loses his position at Mystic Falls General. Well, he pulls out, and puts feelers around the country. He doesn't need to be tied their. Elena isn't anymore. He's kept that assignment at bay, the doppelganger is in the wind and the family has other, more important concerns.
The Gauntlet is keeping the elders busy.
Ezra's been insatiable for the past few weeks. He can't get enough of a workout, of food, of sex, of anything. He wants it all and he wants it all the time.
The mood changes over their freshly made smoothies.
Ezra's not happy, he's anxious and David can see it. Underneath the endorphins, the sweat, and the constant being on David thinks he needs a job. He understands why Mystic Falls General isn't it, but Ezra needs to find something. He's not a shrink, but he posits that because nothing is in Ezra's control right now, anything he can control, he has to - strictly. It's why he's overindulging and dragging David to the gym and to every town event since they've gotten back.
Town events are Ezra's thing. But, David doesn't always have to be there.
It's one cold truth after another and his energy high deflates. David sees her first, but there isn't enough time to warn him before she puts her two cents in.
"Your husband's right, you know. You can't control every minute of every day. Burning the candle at both ends only ends in a whole lot of hot wax. Unless that's totally your thing, then, more power to you, honey." )

( "Steve Jobs" reborn (complete with black sweater and glasses) sits across from his boyfriend at the small Italian restaurant located across from their target. )
The scariest haunted house in Star City, where someone dies from fright every year - reopens its' doors once a year for one week. And in that one week, it always claims a victim. People think that it's just that scary, like it's a rite of passage. Reddit is all over it and it has the highest profile it's ever had - likely due to the new PR team hired by the dead owner's daughter, Charlotte. The dead owner, who died inside in the off-season. And we think - actual haunting.

( The Laughlin property is bigger than Ric remembers, and not perpetually enshrouded. Joshua and his ilk died at the wedding, a loss for Jo and their family, of course, but he was a hardened man and something tells Ric it's for the better when it comes to his girls. The house is bathed in light from all sides, a far cry from how he remembers it. That's how energy works, his wife reminds him.
Once they settle in, a few weeks later they invite Jeremy and his girlfriend down.
The surviving family (cousins, etc) are celebrating Samhain that evening, and ask to use the house. It is everyone's house, the family's, and not just Jo's by inheritance. The night is more about spirituality and the coven's grasp on their ancestral magic. It's more like a harvest ritual for the coming year, for good intentions. It's more poetic and existential and something Jo remembers from her childhood.
Alaric asks Jeremy if he wants to be a part of the 'good intentions' ceremony and Jeremy doesn't know what that is, but, says that he and Dawn are in, but want to check out some kind of Halloween parade afterward. They can be there for family and then have fun, right?
Not hosting the event doesn't mean there isn't work for them to do, because the ice delivery falls through. So, Alaric and Dawn go to pick up ice for the outside bar and Jo and Jeremy oversee the catering. That is, Jeremy tries one of the passed appetizers, and then another before a server tugs the tray away.
Alaric and Dawn bring bags of ice up to the door, but Jo says they are not bringing that through the house. Go around. She enlists Jeremy's help to get it done faster and it isn't long before people start arriving. The three twenty-something cousins, Hamish, Elmira, and Valent, do most of the work but thank the married for their space and for welcoming them with open arms. Jeremy and Dawn dress for the party, but their costumes are ready on their beds upstairs for when they switch it up.
Alaric stays close to his wife, smiling at the arriving family. )
How long has it been since your coven has performed a good intentions ceremony? Does it always have a Halloween backdrop?

Does a dark object give off a specific signature, as opposed to your every day magical object?
( Kol sits on Rebekah's idea to invite Hope up for their bonfire. He doesn't want to invite her for a family event and spring something as deep as the help he and Kieran need from her. If she can even get it. It feels very 'Gotcha' and Kol does not do 'Gotcha'. He is the straightforward brother, unapologetic in his unabashed nature. This is something on another level and so he's something that's very uncharacteristic of him.
He's nervous.
Kieran has a bad week leading up to Halloween and she spends Halloween in bed. Kol volunteers to watch his nephew with Freya so that Henry's parents can have a night on their own - after trick-or-treating in the building of course. Henry makes an adorable cowboy. He even insists on wearing his costume to bed. But first, Hocus Pocus!
Henry falls asleep in his uncle's lap and Freya and him let the film play, though neither watches and Kol ends up muting it. His worry wears on his sleeve tonight. His glass sits untouched in his hand as he sighs, his other hand running through Henry's hair. They speak low, to not wake Henry up, and because the topic at hand is serious. )
Kieran is getting sicker. She has more bad days than good. What's to stop me from taking the choice out of her hands and ensuring she lives a long life?
( And will it work, he knows how cancer and vampirism work if it's advanced enough. )

( Waverly is the one who found the Halloween masquerade, (USO themed) but it's Wynonna's idea to invite Dolls. All Wynonna can do is put the idea out there.
I don't know if you're around or even in the city, but I still am and so is Waves and we have tickets to this sick Halloween masquerade.
She tries to invite Alice who politely declines because she is not going to a party with her mother and, yeah, Wynonna can see that. She's even evolved enough to invite her ex and his new wife. But being so evolved and proud and vocal about how evolved she is, she gets big in her britches and sends the message. She doesn't know if he's even going to reply, but she did it. She's the bigger person all over and better for it.
And it's not just because she treated herself to Knob Creek that afternoon.
It's kind of because of that.
But, either way, he actually responds in the affirmative and Wynonna decides she and Waverly have to be tits-out hot. It's Halloween. Think about the slutty costumes in Purgatory - and multiply that by like 100 in New York. Maybe 1000 !
It's just USO enough, right?
Wynonna peruses the menu beforehand and already decides to drown herself in Old Fashioneds. It's a dumb idea, but Wynonna has never met a dumb idea she didn't flirt with and then fuck on the first date. Maybe even before.
When lets herself into Waverly's bedroom door, she wants to get a certain reaction. Come on. Tell her she aced the assignment. )

( After the seriousness of the evening passes, Freya and Kol have hours before the entire family is altogether. Kol returns to Kieran, but Doc and Rebekah arrive earlier than expected. They are tired parents and they don't stay out as late as they could at one time. Doc hands her a ticket to the event they attended, "They only took Rebekah's, if you would like a bit of respite."
It's, yes, a USO masquerade, whatever that means, but Rebekah has the mask already and Freya has an impeccable pants and blouse collection, she can put something together. Rebekah even helps, encouraging her to have a good time before she leaves them back for New Orleans. Sisters bond as Doc visits with his young son.
*
Faith slips inside the event. She doesn't have a ticket. She had a ticket, thank you Mia and your PR team. (PR also does wonders for a Slayer) But she left her ticket back in her room.
A bouncer can't keep a girl out, (well, he can, (3), maybe he doesn't swing her way), but then Faith enters from the back, slipping through the kitchen like she owns the place (nat 20), eats off of someone's plate and lets herself into the main event. Shades double as a mask because they mask her eyes. It's a look, okay? And it's one she pulls off, zipper down just to there.
The live band's on point, the passing champagne is delicious...
It's just the dance floor. It's not what Faith's used to. Everybody's paired off and doing the swing and hops and shit. There's no bump, no grind. The best part of a party or a night club is the dance floor. She stands at the edge watching some guy lift a girl up and swing her around his legs on each side. Shit's damn impressive, but not what she signed up for. )

( The museum, located in Salem, MA, is closed for Halloween, which works in Katherine and Damian's favor.
Their research pays off, leading to a tomb that isn't a tomb, with a museum that sits above it. That's apparently what old churches are turned into in Witch City, USA. It's three stories, locked when nonoperational, and it outsources to a security company. Likely, one connected to the Colony. They're one hundred percent sure the first body was put to rest down below, but this is their easiest target and the most high profile as it's accessible history. She expects it to be one of the more highly guarded bodies.
But, all the information they can find is the security company they outsource to. On the outside, it looks like a security company.
While Damian is on his reconnaissance mission, Katherine has donned the security uniform, complete with her pony-tail sticking out of the back of her hat. She's undercover, save for her heels and addresses him upon his return. )
Do you think the guard's a witch?

It's a simple phrase, and it gets them inside like Michelle promised. Steps take them down, underneath the address they were given, leading to the entrance to what Damon will learn is a nearby passage in the catacombs below the city. They follow the hanging torches to a well-lit, busy wine cellar. Three people are walking the party, shirts partially unbuttoned, arms outstretched. When they stop, a party guest has the opportunity to drink. Nobody drinks for long, it's more short sips amid conversation, bloodletting as nonchalant as the flowing wine as well.
It's somehow sophisticated and macabre all at the same time. )
Have you ever seen anything like this?
( The room gives way to other rooms, and Damon can see it's a large operation. It's a good thing they have time.
It's a far cry from Damon's education, from Sage, and from her version of sophistication. Has Melanie ever seen a sight like this? It's overstimulating and plays into he monster he never wants to be. He focuses on finding Scarlett and tries not to pay attention to what's happening. But, he should fit in, shouldn't he? Instead, he looks to Melanie.

[His dry tone is probably not going to be a hit with many of them but he appreciates the phone call rather than all of them appearing in his cafe.]
A banshee's not bad. They don't last long, so he probably has to pick up a new one every so often. But if you could throw in something else to sweeten the pot, it couldn't hurt.

The vampires are gathered in clusters like they're in a club, idly chatting and socializing like there isn't a war happening over their heads. Melanie can understand that much - this isn't her first war, after all - but it's still a bit surreal.
What really surprises her though, are the humans. They wander from table to table, waiting for a vampire to beckon them over before offering a wrist for them to sink their teeth into. None of them seem afraid either. In fact, they're almost accepting of their situation.]

Apparently she didn't wave fast enough.

Still, he turns to her with a smile, and leans in to give her a kiss on the cheek.]
Hello, Logan. We weren't expecting you.
[He should have known to expect a visit from his mother-in-law at some point, but he always prefers when she calls first. Given the fact that she never calls first, he has yet to receive such a gift, but he can't help but hope that one day she will. Still, he will take a surprise Logan over surprise his parents every time.
Still, he turns to her with a smile, and leans in to give her a kiss on the cheek.]

Oh, yeah.
[He pulls out his own notes from going through the newspaper records and turned it to face him. It lists every victim of the haunted house recorded, with two of the names circled - one towards the middle being the owner who died in the off-season, and one being the final name on the list.]
Check out the last name. It's the same four being repeated over and over again. Granted, they're not all related, I checked that, but the four names are pretty generic, so it makes sense that multiple families would have them. To me, that's not a coincidence - that's a spirit with a motive.

I haven't participated in one since I left.
[She knows that Josiah wasn't necessarily one for good juju. He believed that the only intentions that matter was the intent that you put into the spells. But he's dead, and the coven's hers now, and maybe it's finally time to banish the ghosts and cobwebs of this house.]
Dad was never really big on them, but Mom would sneak one in every so often when he was out of town.

Depends on the object.
[She has a feeling that Hope isn't simply asking for educational purposes - that there's an item that they're trying to deal with - but she won't pressure her to get involved.]
I've been told, as I am not a witch, that some feel stronger than others. It usually depends on how old the item is, the intent of the witch who made it, and how powerful they were.

Nothing, I suppose.
[Because really, the only thing that could potentially stop Kol is himself. And the sense she's gotten from Kieran is perhaps this is something she's invested in. Shifting next to her brother, she tucks her legs up to her chest as she watches him.]
Is there a reason you haven't discussed it?

I think it's a sign of the times?
[Freya slept through World War II, so she can't exactly speak to it from experience. And while it's fun to get it second hand, she can't say that the swing end of things is what she was expecting either.
She is dressed appropriately, according to Rebekah. And she trusts her sister not to steer her wrong.]
The forties were known for the big band era.

... Oh wow.
[Waverly's plans are slightly more low-key. She appreciates the vibe that Wynonna is going for but October is in the fall, and she does not want to spend the entire night cold.
Looking her sister up and down, she decides how to best approach this.]
That is ... very you.
