( Tyler's never been a man of many words. He barely got out of New Orleans with any sanity left before he returned to Mystic Falls with his tail between his legs. That has been his lowest point. Kidnapping Hayley. Begging Klaus to end his life. And then returning to town later on only to learn from Katherine that Caroline had slept with him. He'd nursed a grudge for a long time. And transferring that grudge to Hayley and to Hope, that was not something he stood for. All of them at one time or another paid for the sins of their fathers. Why Tyler wasn't able to break that curse until it was too late.

It was the anger he'd carried around with him.

You have nothing to worry about. Hope is not on my radar. And I usually keep at least a whole state's distance away from your ex.

( Ex. Baby daddy. What have you. )

Having a truce for years doesn't count if you don't communicate it, does it.

( He half toasts back. )

I did a lot of messed up things back then. A lot. That's one thing I was never proud of. I - couldn't actually believe I did it. After. I'm sorry, Hayley.

[She nods, because the apology helps. They used to be friends once, and while she knows she ruined things first, it still helps to hear it acknowledged.]

We're older. How'd that happen?

[She takes a sip of her own.]

My child is an actual adult.

She grew up. That happens. She get into college?

[She nods.]

Tulane. It'll be nice to have her closer to home.

[Not that Mystic Falls was overly far, but it was still a hike.]

She's really excited for a big trip to Europe with her friends before that though.

Europe. Really. So, she's doing it up right. None of us have actually been, so. Might as well be her.

( He and his friends have had an insular world. The Salvatores don't count. )

[She glances over at him curiously.]

Never thought about taking a hop across the pond?

The packs here always needed help. And as International as the Armory is, my territory is the United States. Maybe I'll put in for a transfer.

[She shakes her head.]

Honestly? I was pretty convinced we were going to be avoiding each other forever.

[She nods with a small smile.]

Then I'm glad you did.

Yeah. Elena was on the verge. She's not anymore.

( But, yeah, he's happy he came back. )

Are you going to drop by and see her later?

[Because that seems like the friendly thing to do.]

Though I think she might be getting out of the hospital soon.

I heard it, too. The plan is to get her out today. There are witches in town, now. So.

( Of course there are. And, as if on time, Hope comes over.

"Mom, hey." She does not know you. )

I'll uh - give you time with your daughter. Congratulations.

( He can only keep the politeness up to far. )

[She nods, turning to face Hope with a smile.]

Good seeing you, Ty.

[Which feels a little weird, but she's not Hayley if she's not leaning on the nicknames for her werewolf friends.

And once Tyler wanders off, she will turn back to Hope.]

Hey. Everything okay?

Yeah. Just thought you might want some mother-daughter time. I am your only daughter to graduate from high school.

( Maybe she just wanted some time with her mom. She's only 18. She still wants mom, time. )

You are. You might even be first in the family to graduate from high school.

[Because Hayley sure didn't and she's ninety percent sure neither did Klaus.]

And we're all very proud of you.

( It was hard, for years, learning about her father through the school's eyes, and per one textbook, Alaric's. But, that comes with secretly being Klaus Mikaelson's daughter. )

I used to worry about other kids learning who my dad was. Not that I was letting friends in before. Now he's here.

[She was going to have a very angry conversation with any hunters who might have interrupted.]

And rumor has it, he's coming to hang out with your aunt Freya, which should be entertaining.
