[It's not often that you find an Original vampire making a mess of things. It's especially not often when that person is Elijah Mikaelson.

It's been years since they've seen each other, since before Bela died. If it weren't for Rebekah's blood, she would still be dead. But from what she remembers of Elijah, he wasn't one for messy kills and haphazard bodies. She had been following the trail, as a mess for one of them is problem for all of them, but when she reaches the other end of the rainbow ...

Well, it's certainly not what she expected.]

Elijah?

[They were friends once. It doesn't occur to her that this could be dangerous.]

( He leaves a trail of bodies. It's what he was made for, wasn't it? A man with no name and hunger for one thing he shouldn't. But, he has no self control, not when he gets one taste. His trail luckily leads someone back into a dark, dank alley. If Elijah were able to see himself, he'd be disgusted, and he'd need a shower right away. Not to mention, the t-shirt and leather jacket he currently sports are probably not what Bela is expecting.

He snarls, turning to face the voice, mouth dripping in blood, eyes dark. )

You shouldn't come any closer.

[She holds up her hands and stays where she is, and immediately notices the lack of recognition. While she wouldn't say that she and Elijah were close, his family certainly paid her enough that she would be remembered.]

I won't. But I wouldn't taste very good either.

[The veins darken and ripple under her eyes as her vamp face slides through briefly, showing that she's one of them. Like him.]

You're - like me.

( He drops the limp wrist he'd held in his hand, unable to process discovering someone like him. Slowly, steadily, he rises. His strength sits underneath, a thousand years unused. )

What... are we?

[Well this is increasingly concerning. But she does her best to stay calm and not any of that show on her face.]

You're a vampire.

[She's unsure how much she should give away, given how much he doesn't seem to know, but she should at least indicate that she knows him.]

You're one of the oldest vampires in existence, actually.

( His brow furrows, because along with having no recollection of who he is, he has zero recollection of what that might be. )

If that's true then why did I wake up outside of a truck stop with no memory. You called me. Elijah.

That, I unfortunately don't have an answer to.

[But she might know the right people to ask. That conversation, however, is better had off the street.]

We shouldn't have this conversation here, however. Do you have somewhere we can go?

( He gets quiet again, knowing full well the rat-trap match box he secured is not going to impress anyone. He's never invited anyone by, either. He feeds at night, and sometimes during the day, and for the most part hides in the shadows.

He's in a four floor walk-up, the room just large enough for him and Bela. There are no cockroaches at the moment, but they may just be hiding. )

I convinced a disreputable man named Larry to rent me this room. Without an identity or means of income, most options weren't options. It is filthy, I know. I do what I can.

( While barely spending time here. )

[It's better than inviting him into her loft before she fully understands what's going on. She would hate to have to reset the deed so soon after moving in.]

I've seen worse.

[She offers a small smile, even though it's still startling, to see an Original in such squalor.]

And we can resolve that, as soon as we determine what happened to you.

Something must've, if I awoke to no memories or who I am, or was, or where I came from. And I take it from your acknowledgment that you at least have some answer.

( Like Elijah has a leg to stand on. But, even without memories, Elijah is bold, if briefly entitled. He's old, is he? Well, that would make him her elder. )

I'm listening.

[Now, this seems like the man she remembers.]

Your name is Elijah Mikaelson. You're a thousand years old, and your mother, Esther, was the witch who created vampires by turning her children into them. You were her third child, second oldest son.

[And then she waits, to see if any of that triggers anything.]

And therefore, one of the oldest of my kind.

( That he takes in, understanding. )

And my siblings?

Still alive. Most of them, at least.

[She takes a deep breath.]

I can contact them, if you like? See what they may know about your situation.

Unless, they happen to be why my mind has been altered like this. Perhaps, as some revenge, or, some haphazard spell gone wrong. All though, if my family is as old as you say, it's safe to assume they would not bungle something as important as a memory spell on their kin.

( Which, is a lot of words, but not an answer. )

Should I take it as a sign that they are not here beside me as I feast on vagrants and punk rockers?

I know that Klaus and Rebekah would not abandon you if they knew this was the state you were in.

[Not unless they had a very good reason.]

But I haven't spoken to them in some time, so I can't give you the specifics without ... giving them a call.

Then, let's. I'd provide a phone, but I haven't one.

( You wake up with amnesia and end up in New York? The phone didn't become a priority. )

Don't worry. I have that handled.

[She pulls out her phone and steps to the other side of the room - he can still hear, but for now it's giving them the illusion of privacy - and calls Klaus.]

( And Klaus is currently at a quaint little bed and breakfast. Cami is doing the crossword on their balcony and he takes the phone call sitting beside her.

He hasn't quite settled into any madness with Cami there to keep him sane-ish. But, he's still the picture of not quite all there. And still not the best father. If he can't be there, he's not good at .. not being there. )

Bela Talbot, to what do I owe this call? Friendly, I hope.

( She's caught him in his perpetual mood. )

[She does raise an eyebrow at that, but doesn't call him out on it. She knows better.]

As far as I'm aware.

[Because she doesn't know what Klaus has been up to, so this might be a loaded question.]

I just wanted to reach out because I ran into your brother, Elijah.

( It's been a trying few months. His smile cracks, looking over at Cami. )

I suppose he made his choice. ( That he doesn't remember. ) That he regrets?

Hard to regret something you don't remember.

[To say the least.]

Especially when you don't remember what you are either.

Well, when you ask family to erase your memory so hastily, you forget about fine print and specifics. Has he alerted the locals yet? Is this about the oncoming pitchforks?

( He will lessen the histrionics, but when in his life will he be able to do this again? )

I think the pitchforks have been averted for now.

[Bela knows how to clean up a mess, she'll take care of it.]

But given as he can't tell me what happened that led to this point, I was hoping that you would fill in the blanks.

Just a little spell between family. Elijah added the amnesia for the dramatic effect.

( And to escape his family bonds. He looks to Cami, again. They aren't supposed to be in the same city, let alone the same hemisphere. )

He's not in France, is he?

No. He's in New York.

[She is starting to get tired of this piecemeal information, but she knows better than to push Klaus for anything before he's ready.]
