[Her phone buzzes with a message from Rudy, but she ignores that for right now, not wanting to break the conversation. She flips the phone over before facing him more, brushing her thumb against his hand.]
We hadn't really had the chance to talk about that yet. Whether or not kids were something you wanted.
[It feels weird, in some ways, bringing it up now, but she can't say it's not a relevant question.]
Yeah, well, kids -- weren't always options for us. And we raised Jack. ( he wouldn't have had a straight answer, that's for sure. ) Our life isn't kid-friendly. ( he always lumps in Sam. )My life. Isn't.
( but, he does know there were hunters that had them. his mom's parents. they saw husbands and wives over the years. the one gay hunting couple. tasha banes and her kids. )
And up til now - it was never an option. Ben was the closest... I came. And then we all raised Jack together. He was the closest thing I had to a kid. Our kid.
It's complicated on my end too. As much as I'm sure that Katherine and I are the last doppelgangers in existence, we don't know if there are other spells that were bound with our blood that would need a new doppelganger to undo.
[She doesn't know if she feels comfortable signing up her descendants for the traumatic life she lived.]
But I always thought I could adopt maybe. I really did want to be a mom.
My dad -- really screwed us up. And, I always thought if anything, I'd be uncle Dean, but if that's something you want. ( he rolls it around his mind. he knows his answer. ) We'd figure it out. I'm not getting any younger. ( he laughs once into a smile, his thumb caressing hers. ) The bunker's not forever, it'll always be there, but... maybe it's time. After this, squaring away everything with Ben. Maybe we get a real house.
[She smiles a bit at that, before shaking her head.]
Ben isn't the only thing to get settled. We have my parents to deal with too because they too can't live in the bunker forever. We may not be getting any younger, but we do still have time. Let's worry about what's in front of us first, but ... keep the future in mind.
[She doesn't want to rush this part either, the part where they're still figuring each other out. But it's good to know that they're both looking to the future.]
[She doesn't think Caroline is used to being apologized to by Elena's boyfriends who are mean to her, so it'll be nice all the same.]
And she'll be happy to help with Irina too. It might be good for her to be at the school with other witches. Start building her own community that is not inherently connected to a coven that might be collapsing soon.
I don't think it'll be tomorrow. But even before he remembered you, he reached out for a reason.
[This part Elena understands. Wanting to understand where she came from when she realized that she was adopted. Wanting to talk to Isobel, even if she wound up being far more complicated than she realized.]
