Whatever, man, I'll be back up to help, too. How was Thanksgiving?
( Jeremy likes Sam in a, you're kind of like a brother-in-law, and a fellow hunter, respectful you don't eat like a jackass way. Also, he lent Jeremy clothes. That went a long way. )
[Sam and Dawn are going to be best friends probably, eventually, because she has lots of nerdy questions and he knows where all the nerd stuff is. But for now Dawn will just nod at his tallness and let him take some of the weight so they can continue down the stairs unencumbered.]
Nice place you got here.
["Thanks," Sam replies dryly. "If you look at it sideways we inherited it, but in actual reality we're mostly just in an extended squatting situation."
Dawn laughs.]
Hey, sometimes squatting until people forget that it isn't actually yours is a great way to get cool stuff.
( Taking step, by step, by step. He thought his girlfriend was not quite the squatting type. But he's also a hunter. With his former inheritance? They haven't discussed him and Elena and they're not asking for it. Priorities and hurt girlfriends. )
( Because she's handed off, he heads back up the stairs to help Sam with the last of their stuff.
Grayson hasn't managed to have the talk with his wife yet, because of time-tables, so he's just a little frayed at the edges when he comes around the corner, too.
"You must be Dawn," he says, echoing what he didn't just here. Maybe they could yell it to everyone. )
Your mom's pretty smart. I had a very small window before the pain meds kicked in, so it would have sucked if you weren't there to pick up the phone.
[And she had plenty of cooks in the kitchen to make sure she got out okay.]
Fortunately Isaac was very accommodating considering he was regulated to babysitter with two teenage Slayers and a drugged-up Watcher with a bum leg.
[Elena laughs. "Isaac does what Bonnie asks of him. He's smart that way." Then she gestures to the main table. "Come, sit. Can I get you guys something to drink? Are you hungry?"]
( It's been a long few days. Grayson shakes his head.
"Your mom's washing up but she'll join shortly," Grayson says, pulling a chair out to help Dawn. Jeremy sits in the chair by Dawn, ready to help if he needs it. )
Isaac's Bonnie's new boyfriend, right? We like him?
[Dawn doesn't know if that counts for much, but Elena will swing back in and back her up with the tea and beer requested.
"No, we like him. He's a good guy." Honestly, Elena mostly likes him because he makes Bonnie happy and that is the most important thing, but it helps that Isaac is a good guy.]
And he works for Allison, and we like her. ( For Sam, apparently, too. He's lumped into that. Sometimes he just goes with it. He's too much of a guy to be like, yeah, she's good for you, man. But his sister thinks so, so he thinks so.
"I like you, too," Allison says, emerging from the back hallways. She has some tote bags in hand. She approaches Sam. "I'm going to the store to grab some things, stop by the real estate office in town," she says, giving him a quick peck on the lips. He's welcome to come with, but this is meeting time! And Elena is extended family now. So Jeremy is extended-extended family? And likewise, Dawn? )
[Sam is definitely going to come, he and Dawn will have more time to chat later. Best he not intrude on meeting the parents. They will say their hi's and goodbyes, and once Allison is gone, Dawn raises an eyebrow.]
So that's Allison Argent. I've heard very cool things about her.
[All from respective corners of the supernatural, but it's always nice to put a name to a face.]
Some from Isaac, but also from people who don't work for her, which is nice.
Until now, I'd only heard of her. Worked with her through other hunters. ( He knows his dad might bristle at this information, but he's done hiding shit from his parents. He's a grown adult. And they didn't even tell him his sister wasn't his sister. (She is, in every sense of the word. But still. Habits and dying hard. Much like his drinking. He's better about it and more into the bottle on a job, but he's able to cork it around his girlfriend.) ) But, always heard good things for the most part. Her name carries real weight.
Slayers and hunters teaming up has been hit and miss in the past but her ties to Scott McCall carry a lot of weight. Especially after her grandfather.
[She makes a face. Her one and only encounter with Gerard Argent had been unsettling to say the least. Her squad of Slayers had taken in a werewolf under their protection and Gerard didn't take that well. She had been a new Watcher at the time, barely out of college, but she was the only one who could talk to him without immediately punching him in the face.
(She wanted to - she doubts there are people who haven't wanted to punch Gerard Argent in the face, but as she is not a Slayer, it would not have been wise for her to do so.)]
I met Gerard once. He was ... something.
[Elena raises an eyebrow as she settles with her own drink. "Sounds like a story."
Dawn shrugs.]
I try not to speak ill of the dead who are not currently undead.
("Gerard is," Grayson starts, but his son interrupts. )
Allison's grandfather, and who we have to thank for Elena and everyone being driven out of town a few months ago. ( Originally. ) I never knew you met Gerard Argent.
( But, why would they talk about it. He's not saying it like )
He was a piece of work, but like that guy Connor or Tripp. Worse.
It was a long time ago. I was the Watcher for the Stanford squad of Slayers, and a werewolf on campus came to them for help. Somehow he had wound up on Gerard's radar and he was worried that they were going to hunt him down.
[Guess she is telling the story, but maybe she can do it without invoking his ghost.]
He was not wrong. Gerard came to campus telling some story about a dangerous monster, trying to invoke the soldier part of the Slayer end of things, but he had no proof our werewolf had done anything wrong and I was the only one who could talk to him without punching him in the face.
[She shakes her head.]
Although I very much wanted to, don't get me wrong. I just lacked the super strength to justify throwing away my restraint. Every time he looked at me like I was some silly little girl, I could imagine giving him a solid fat lip.
( He's trying to follow it all. He has, some. Allison is a queen of hunters, but it's like a company. This was her grandfather. And they had different philosophies. Obviously, very different. )
Are there still slayers at Stanford? Are they on every campus?
Not every campus, no. Our numbers are a lot smaller than people think.
[Especially with the most recent blow to the castle, but that's something Dawn is trying not to think about right now.]
Most Slayers are activated as teenagers, and even with awakening every potential there's still a finite number, due to the limits of the magic we used to do that, so there's still the whole one dies and one is activated situation.
[There are probably going to be a lot of activations coming soon.]
Being teenagers, they bond hard in training, and so they'll often gang up to go to the same school, if they decide to go to college. So you'll get a cluster of them on a few campuses, but we have other older cells that try and cover other cities. But we can't be everywhere, unfortunately.
Every squad gets a Watcher. Fortunately, Watchers lend themselves to being academics, so if they're not a student, they get themselves hired as an adjunct or a professor. Or an administrator.
[They're very good at blending in when they have to.]
It used to be every Slayer gets a Watcher, but there are too many of them now. Though some of them are lucky enough to marry their own personal Watcher. Which!
[She turns to Jeremy.]
We'll have a wedding to go to soon. It's not new news, Beck proposed months ago, but I heard a vicious rumor that we may be getting actual invitations soon.
( A watcher JR, Dawn calls them. Sometimes it's more undercover work. Fake distant family. My cousin is the professor of this.
"So they're not like priests," Grayson says to himself. )
No. They can have sex. And get married. It's like a trainer, not a --. ( whatever you'd call your religious confidant. to Dawn. ) I won't hold my breath a slayer-watcher wedding won't end in some kind of ( right, mixed company. dad. ) I mean, I like weddings.
I mean, you're not wrong. Wear something nice, but easy to move in and/or conceal weapons. But! I should be cast free by then, so also bring your dancing shoes.
[She flashes him a grin as Miranda comes around the corner, finally free of the dishes.
[There will be one (1) obligatory dance with your girlfriend, Jeremy. If you really don't want to, she'll pick something slow.]
She's relocated now, though. Her husband-to-be was recently tapped to be the leader of the human faction in New Orleans.
[Miranda nods slowly as she moves to sit next to her husband. "There are factions in New Orleans?"]
Yes. A representative from each of the major ... species, as it were. Witches, vampires, werewolves and humans. They work together in order to try and keep it peaceful, and not having lots of murder all the time, which was a problem for them in the past.
( Dawn can get him to do anything. He's just giving her a hard time. He does like slow dances. And dance-dances. He just doesn't often. He remembers decade dances, okay? )
A big problem. For a time, there was a vampire king, and the witch's quarter and then a crime family of wolves. And bayou wolves. Back when Klaus first moved to New Orleans, there was a lot of unrest.

Sorry, I'm in less than perfect condition. We had a small castle collapse over Thanksgiving.
