From what I understood, the witches who set it up were intending to bodyjack their occupants. They're dead now.

Yeah, we've been after these bodies for months. The last two were prepackaged with a nice resurrection spell and saddled Elena with her parents and the Sullivans with their dead son. Before that, Katherine and Damien were marked. Pretty sure they're still in the wind.

Sam had plenty of support. In addition to Allison, he also had the regent of New Orleans, Scott McCall and assorted friends. There was even a demigod.
