There are five founding families, right? Fells, Salvatores, Gilberts, Forbes and Lockwoods. The last remaining members of the Salvatores and Forbes families are vampires and Tyler Lockwood and the remaining Gilberts are all MIA. Which just leaves the Fells who don't seem that involved in their family history.
I've done a little digging myself. The Fell's, especially, have a lot of losses in their families, so I could see them stepping back from all things founding related. The Salvatores being... Damon and Stefan Salvatore?
That's them. I'm pretty sure one of them killed the sheriff, I just don't have any proof.
[They've been on a bit of a spree.]
They're also decently old vampires - the Forbes one, Caroline? She was turned fairly recently. Maybe in the last five or six years. But the thing is, they're a weird kind of vampire. Matt mentioned something about turning their emotions off?
Killed the sheriff, dumped in his trunk. Flashy for local vampires.
( Has she brought her thoughts to them, he wonders, but she shares more about Caroline Forbes. )
Turning their emotions off? Not possible. Vampires are vampires. Demons. They have all the emotions, just not the ones we want them to. You come face to face with any of them?
The "animal attacks" with torn out throats or missing hearts really seem to lean that way.
[And yes, she knows that, but maybe there's something else that they're not seeing.]
Maybe they found another way. I don't know. But there's definitely something in this town killing people, and it's probably these weirdo psuedo-vampires.

[She starts ticking them off on her fingers.]

[And normally, Lindsay would agree with him except:]
They walk in the sun, too. Haven't figured out how they're doing that yet.

( He closes the file, sitting back, looking around them. )
Angel destroyed the ring of Amara back in the year 2000.
