( Despite not being the "picture of a watcher" someone might have when they think of the word, he exemplifies everything they stand for - in this new, modern age, Rupert Giles instills in him - as does his mother. He's made a consultant at first, sent to find, evaluate, and help the newest slayers - the greenest.
Lindsay is not his usual assignment.
Buffy likes the work he's been doing, but Giles thinks and she agrees, that it might do him well to keep a post. Not to mention, he's not logging as much field time as they now require watchers to have. When you're the training wheels, you don't see much more than a graveyard before you're handing your charge off to someone else. Buffy acknowledges this, maybe it's a flaw in their system, but she has the next assignment for him either way.
Mystic Falls. Don't get her started on the animal attacks, the sudden evacuation, the old money, the new money, and, apparently, vampires in all flavors.
Beck doesn't usually look his assignments down. He goes where he's assigned. He helps. But, being freelance gave him the time to fly back and see his big family. Or, connect when they were in the states. That, he'll have to get used to. He asks for everything Buffy has on Mystic Falls, and spends the flight catching up on a large dossier.
It isn't hard to navigate his way in his rental car from BWI into Virginia to Mystic Falls. The town square is kind of it when it comes to attractions.
He lets himself into the grill, shoulder bag slung over his head at a diagonal. It falls over his button down, and despite his "lack of field time," it's clear he takes pride in his body and still trains. Because there are muscles underneath. He keeps his hair cropped and gelled up. He doesn't lift his sunglasses before making his way over to Lindsay. No, he takes them off and slides into the booth across from her and sets his bag aside. )
[She's about to tell him off for just sitting down at someone's table, but then he speaks and she blinks, readjusting her expectations for the conversation. She studies him carefully, because this isn't what she expected at all, but for now she'll roll with it.]
Giles is old school, and, if you believe it, had a rebel streak longer than mine. I'm still a family guy. Big, Irish family. Seven brothers. Me ma's a watcher and I'm the only one that followed in her foorsteps. But, I kept my style.
( And if she ever meets his mother, he'll see quite the wild child grown up. )
[Lindsay nods slowly, because wow that sounds like a big family.]
I'm pretty sure my family also considers me the rebel. Or the disappointment. Probably more the latter, but not much that can be done about it.
[But enough about that. Maybe they should work, yes? Let's work. She pulls out one of her files and passes it over. Inside is all the known vampires, a timeline of major events, and any notes on things that have become confusing.]
Here's what I have so far. Nothing super concrete as to what the problem is, but my original source is dead, so I can't exactly go back to him for clarification. I've gotten myself an in through the Mystic Falls Sheriff's Department though.
His name was Matt Donovan. He grew up here and used to be the sheriff.
[She pauses as she leans back.]
He helped me take out a nest not too far from here, and I think he was trying to warn me away. But before he could successfully do that he turned up dead in a car trunk so I figured I'd stick around. See what I could find out.
He was. In fact, he mentioned something about a "Founder's Council" which admittedly is some old money shit but also they were attempting to manage the vampire problem. The sheriff's station has vampire cells in the basement.
[So her assessment is that Mystic Falls has an awareness of the supernatural, but things are more complicated than they seem.]
There are five founding families, right? Fells, Salvatores, Gilberts, Forbes and Lockwoods. The last remaining members of the Salvatores and Forbes families are vampires and Tyler Lockwood and the remaining Gilberts are all MIA. Which just leaves the Fells who don't seem that involved in their family history.
I've done a little digging myself. The Fell's, especially, have a lot of losses in their families, so I could see them stepping back from all things founding related. The Salvatores being... Damon and Stefan Salvatore?
That's them. I'm pretty sure one of them killed the sheriff, I just don't have any proof.
[They've been on a bit of a spree.]
They're also decently old vampires - the Forbes one, Caroline? She was turned fairly recently. Maybe in the last five or six years. But the thing is, they're a weird kind of vampire. Matt mentioned something about turning their emotions off?
Killed the sheriff, dumped in his trunk. Flashy for local vampires.
( Has she brought her thoughts to them, he wonders, but she shares more about Caroline Forbes. )
Turning their emotions off? Not possible. Vampires are vampires. Demons. They have all the emotions, just not the ones we want them to. You come face to face with any of them?
The "animal attacks" with torn out throats or missing hearts really seem to lean that way.
[And yes, she knows that, but maybe there's something else that they're not seeing.]
Maybe they found another way. I don't know. But there's definitely something in this town killing people, and it's probably these weirdo psuedo-vampires.

You're early, I like that.

You're Beck?
[Because Buffy did at least give her a name.]

( He flashes her his winning smile that always gets him away with things, especially involving his ma. )
Not what you expected?

[She can admit when she's wrong. She's not going to lie and try to cover.]
Most of the Watchers I've met have been more ... Giles?

( That's true of everything. But they're not at wisdom, right now.
He takes the folder, opening it. He pulls the flap to his bag back before he removes a case. Putting on reading glasses, he reads what she's found. )
Who was the original source?

Sheriff was in the know, though?

They walk in the sun, too. Haven't figured out how they're doing that yet.
