[Sam knows that he and Allison have a long overdue conversation coming, but one of the fortunate thing about being surrounded by people is that there hasn't been a good opportunity to have it. Not on the drive back to San Francisco, not over dinner and not when they finally collapse into bed because it was a long day - there's no need to make it longer. They have time.
Josh and Davina take claim of Jed and Ben, promising to get them back to New Orleans in one piece, and they head back to Beacon Hills for their flight out of LAX. Chris and Scott head back to Beacon Hills together, leaving Sam and Allison alone - he was only going to be able to dodge that bullet for so long.
So he goes for a run.
Dean calls about Ben on his way back, and as Allison comes out with coffee, Sam takes one from her with a smile.]
Thanks.
[He holds up his phone.]
That was Dean. Nothing's on fire, he was just checking in.
[That's a small lie, Dean's emotional well-being is on fire and his brother isn't the most emotionally intelligent, but it's not the kind of fire Sam and Allison are going to have to put out - Dean's going to have to figure out that one on his own. Probably with some help from Elena.]
( Allison Argent is a patient woman. It's the archer in her, and it comes with the discipline of being a gymnast. She knows better than to let things build up, to stew in her feelings, but she also doesn't need to push certain people to talk about certain things. She thinks about trying to catch Elena before she flies back to Kansas - but then she thinks better of it. Because, even if Elena knows what she's asking about - Lucifer - it's not Elena's story to tell. That... and, Elena spent the week helping Dean through something personal. Allison and her can catch up properly another time. She was only checking in on her because she knows Elena went after the last round of bodies. Like Allison and the others' lives in Beacon Hills, things pile up.
She leaves her thread with Lydia open, but other than her confirmation that it was done and she came out of it wanting to be more well-read, she leaves everything else to herself.
Finally, they're alone and she thinks, maybe they can talk about it. And he goes for a run.
Because of course he does. Isn't his brother supposed to be the harder nut to crack? She supposes if Lucifer - the Devil had claim to her body, it would be a touchy subject, too. It's not like she ever sat Stiles down about the Nogitsune taking over. She was in France.
Her olive branch is coffee as she finds him post-stretch after his run, and apparently, a conversation with his brother. The fact that his brother is opening up to him, too. Well, apparently, she's going to have to spearhead this.
Unless he doesn't want to talk about it. As long as he doesn't have a problem with her. She'll start with addressing Elena and Dean. Maybe ease until God, the Devil, or Bob. )
I messaged with Elena. It does sound like he has a handle on things. ( And that, the outcome is kind of out of his hands, but again, she didn't pry. ) Apparently, he's staying there, though. In Michigan.
[He's not avoiding it forever. He just needed to get his thoughts in order, and oddly enough, the reappearance of Ben gives him the touch point that he needs.]
The things that got screwed up there was partially my fault. So it's good that he's getting the chance to fix it.
[He probably will never be welcome at Lisa's front door, but that's okay. He doesn't need to be.
He takes a sip of his coffee before he continues.]
So. Lucifer.
[He pauses as he thinks it through.]
It's not actually as bad as it sounds?
[No, Sam, it's pretty bad but on the scale of Winchester maybe not.]
It didn't sound like it, but, I'm glad he's getting a chance to make it right, then.
( From what Elena says, this is a Dean thing. But, again, Elena isn't sharing his business, only that it's his business and maybe everything will be right in the end.
She takes her sip of coffee, too, setting it down, both hands clasping it from the bottom of the cup. )
Okay. Here's me, with an open mind about how the devil possessing you or wanting you - expecting to? Isn't as bad as it sounds. You used the word, meatsuit.
Yeah, because that's the word they understand. The more accurate term would be vessel.
[He turns to face her more.]
And it's not as bad as it sounds because for one, I have to consent, which I'm not going to do again. And for two, Lucifer is very, very dead. But I'm not sure a lot of people know that.
[Benny is not usually paired with Cordy for missions like this - she pretty much has a permanent field partner in the form of Angel, and no one is competing with him for that title. But Abernathy had a side project for Angel back in Los Angeles, and someone needed to play Slayer reach out so Abernathy promised he would send Cordelia with backup.
There was a speech. Angel is an intense dude. Benny's never really sure what to make of him.
But Cordy's always great - you know where you stand with her, and he's happy to have her back for this trip to Mississippi. And when they come up on the smoldering corpse of the ship in question, he pulls off his sunglasses with a frown.]
Well, shit. Your friends don't do things in half-measures do they?
["Half-measures doesn't usually get the job done." Cordy pauses, then turning to nod towards the brunette on the shore. "C'mon, there's Faith."]
( For all this talk of punitive measures, Faith's back at the scene of the crime to sew up any loose ends. She's got the buttoned up vampire making sure the South doesn't rise again if they need any last minute mind-altering. She's good, she can blow your mind, but she can't erase it.
Looking out onto the wreckage, she spies - a couple of smaller boats, one clearly law enforcement, and one - coast guard? She didn't know they make it this far inland. Probably had a trek down the Mississippi river, she figures.
No ambulance-like ship, though, no stretchers. Some body bags. Sucks there were human casualties, but they're unavoidable when they get mixed up in vampire shit. She peers back at the warehouse where Rhett's carousing. He already compelled the girl Faith knocked off the shore yesterday and now he's focusing on the small office William took over.
Turning back, she cracks a smile as they approach. )
Well if it isn't the reigning Queen Bitch of Sunnydale High.
( Slayerfest '98. Best to leave it in the past, though, right? )
Not that I see. Any loose ends are being Butler'd. They're saying no survivors. Imagine that. How you doing, Benny Boy? First time in the M-i-s-s-i-s-s-i-p-p-i?
They make sure he and Ben have plane tickets back to New Orleans, that all their stuff is recovered from their car, and even find Jed a charger for his phone. Upon turning his phone back on, he receives and avalanche of texts and missed calls from Finch, and even a few from Josie, trying to figure out where he is and what happened to him.
He does text Finch back that evening. That turns into a phone call where she unloads three months of worry in one very direct and specific rant.
He also texts Josie back, letting her know that he is both alive and okay and that he'll tell her what happened later but does she think he might be able to salvage his first semester somehow? She says that she'll be back in New Orleans on Sunday, and they can figure it out then.
It's still weird, thinking that he's missed three months of time with his friends - he doesn't have his boyfriend's expanded sense of time, three months is a lot. But as he makes his way into the Abattoir courtyard and spots Josie and Hope on the fountain, he flashes them an awkward smile.]
So would you believe I was kidnapped by witches?
["I would, actually. Witches are kind of a problem right now." Josie crosses the space to him and pulls him into a hug. "I'm so glad you're okay. I'm sorry I didn't notice you were missing sooner."]
( Ben reassures his boyfriend they'll do something about his first semester and, if they have to, they know a few vampires that could smooth his transition back. He sees this is important to him, and assumes it can't be easy to fit back into a school you never started at, despite accepting. And, he's never met modern red tape he couldn't bypass. If Jed wants to address a board of whoever on his own behalf, either way, Ben will support him.
Ben is calmer than Jed is, less worried about what went on outside. Ancient age and a stint in Malivore do that to you, but he has sympathy and he pledges to be there for Jed personally, as well as academically. He even offers to tutor him in ancient history. (It's a half joke, only half if right about what scholars think his times were like.)
Hope meets Ben halfway, pulling him in for a - glad you're not dead, just missing - Hope hug. To be fair, she assumed Ben wasn't dead - or in Malivore, Malivore is done - but she didn't have any answers beyond that. And she may have been the loudest person reminding them of who Jed always was - Ben being nomadic and solitary anyway, and maybe to not worry.
Also, they had school, Danny drama, some wild magic -- Yeah, fine, she feels bad.
"I'll take all the blame there," Hope says, pulling back and turning to face Jed and her girlfriend. "Our less than humble beginnings triggered my inner bitch and I assumed you ditched us. I won't even say, in my defense."
But, in her defense it's completely something he would do.
"To be fair, if Josie wanted to drop off the face of the Earth for a gap year, I wouldn't say no."
Ben has only heard second and thirdhand about Jed's reputation - but by the time he "joined," Jed had evolved far past the few stories he's heard. The less said about them, the better. Unless it gave context to what's happening in the present.
Anyway, Ben and Hope came a long way and found their understanding after taking on his father (and Aurora). )
He was held in a cell and I was trapped in a spell. Same witches. Different means.
[He says that for Hope's benefit, because she puts more than enough guilt on her shoulders. He can't exactly blame her for taking his past behavior as gospel. He's back now, and that's the part that matters.]
Hopefully I'll be able to get my spot at school back for next semester. It'll be nice to get back to something normal.
["We'll figure it out. Worse comes to worse, we'll compel an admissions agent."
Jed raises an eyebrow.]
Yeah, I guess that's an option. Hopefully it won't come to that.
( He shouldn't worry. She's not taking it that personally. She has graduated from guilt, well, guilt not directly related to her. Jed can't blame her for his sterling reputation, his beginnings with Rafael and Alyssa Chang. She does like this Jed more, it's true. But, he came from something.
"It probably will," Hope hates to break it to him. "You're a no-show dropout as far as they're concerned."
If he accepted his spot in their year. )
They won't listen, or bend the rules for extenuating circumstances?
It's kind of hard to explain you were kidnapped by witches to a world that mostly doesn't believe they exist. And it's not as though I have any kind of documentation for anything else.
[He'll figure it out. If he has to go to another school, he'll figure that out too.
"I'm sure there's a way." Josie offers him a smile. "I'm just glad you guys are both safe. Have you talked to Finch?"]
Yep. She tore me a new one, but she knows I'm alive.
[After verifying that Spike is actually Spike, and that he really is alive, and having passed him off to Buffy for their own reunion, Mia takes advantage of the fact that she has a couple of days before she has to return to Star City, so may as well check in on another friend she doesn't get to see in person all that often.
( Mia is like the friend that Hope never thought she'd have. Hope's the rough around the edges weird and violent girl with the chip on her shoulder, but the tabloids and the magazine get Mia all wrong. That, or Hope doesn't know what it means to be a socialite.
She pictured debutante balls, the flashy engagement she knows was broken up, but Mia's got rough edges and curly hair and just gets into things.
Hope is very self-actualized, but if there was someone she'd want to emulate? It might be Mia. )
Hey! Yes! This is such weird timing. Josie and me and two of our friends who coincidentally stumbled onto a witch conspiracy I suspect you were also involved in... is so many words to just say, we're in the quarter at a place called Rousseau's. And you should definitely come. Also, we need to compare notes because I've heard 'duck and cover' before, but sometimes people just say it and other times they mean it? All that's to say, get your ass down here.
[And roughly twenty minutes later, she does stroll her way into Rosseau's. Her eyes scan the building, taking in all the exits as she's been trained to do, before her eyes land on Hope's table and she makes her way closer.]
( Hope is standing at one of the two tables they've grabbed. )
Everyone, this is Mia. Mia, you remember my girlfriend Josie, and this is Ben and Jed, and our friend( Mia might doubt Colm is Josie's friend ) Colm is at the bar with his roommate, Ivan. Ben and Jed were being held captive among the Redwoods. Pretty sure, that was the flip-side to whatever it is you were doing post-castle.
Ah, yep. Thanks for bringing Spike back, by the way.
[That's more to Jed and Ben. It means more than she can and will say.]
But yeah, they were tracking down some old ass witch bodies to burn them so that the witches in question couldn't keep body jacking their descendants. And then my team took out the actual witches and burned down their boat.
[Stefan is not nervous, per say, to introduce Buffy to Klaus. Their relationship over the last decade or so has mellowed into something close to friendship, but still more complicated. He doesn't think it will ever be like it was in Chicago, but maybe that's for the best and they can find a balance that isn't encouraging all of Stefan's worst instincts.
He holds the door open for Buffy as they head into the newly remodeled Rosseau's, taking in the polished bar and decor with a nod.]
You'd never guess that this place was blown up a few months ago.
[Benefits of witches being involved, he supposes.]
( Klaus would argue that Chicago was the pinnacle of their friendship, but perhaps the memory is tarnished both by Mikael's presence and that Stefan was going through one of his more baroque periods - it's fine, he likes their friendship now. They've overcame mountains and molehills and if anyone asked, he doesn't write Stefan Salvatore is my best friend in my diary. (But, make no mistake, Klaus doesn't have friends and Stefan is his best.)
Klaus takes his sweet time, because the kids are down below in the late afternoon and he gives them their space. But, he listens in. He always listens in. All these progressive children these days. (Can you call an ancient demigod a child. Shrug.) He also likes to make an entrance. Did he overhear they were going to Rousseau's.
He did.
This is a casual, innocent way of happening to end up at the same establishment with old friends. Any way he can make it up to Hope, even if it's indirect. Just knowing she'll be there - he feels like more of a father. (He knows this doesn't make him more of a father, just let him have it.) He assumes Cami won't say something, but she'll have her thoughts. It's fine. They're fine. Everyone is fine!
Buffy, channeling her inner 90's leopard princess, obliges Stefan, stepping through the threshold and into a newly remodeled Rousseau's. There is now a parallel back room with a skylight for more seating on this floor, and steps going up to a second level where -- )
I don't know what it was like before, but - your nieces are up there, aren't they?
( Two of them, anyway. They're deep in chatter and don't see her yet. She almost waves - so uncool - but she realizes they're otherwise occupied. )
Hope is Klaus' daughter?
( She does wonder, as most would when their dads are garbage if this is a strategic dad move on his part, but how would she know? )
[Cami is just grateful she was invited to dinner. And she also appreciates that he's giving Hope her own space, but there are only so many supernatural friendly bars in New Orleans.
Stefan nods as he steps in the rest of the way, scanning the room until he spots Klaus and Cami at the table on the second level.]
Hope is Klaus' daughter.
[It's a magical loophole he can't even begin to explain. And he does notice Hope and Josie, but leaves them to their time. He's not looking to crash their date anymore than he's sure they want to crash his.]
And it looks like he brought his wife with him.
[He waves to Cami and she waves back with a smile.]
( Looks more like a friend-hang, but, Buffy's not a crasher, either. Well. Not when it doesn't involve the Riverboat. She follows Stefan, hand in his. )
You'll make me a diagram if I need one?
( Buffy approaches the table with Stefan. Klaus stands from his chair, and greets the erstwhile slayer and his old friend.
"Stefan!," he says, coming around the chair. "And this must be Buffy, the vampire slayer.")
In polite circles most people call me, Buffy, or Summers if they're getting last name-happy - but, I do answer to she who hangs out a lot in cemeteries. It's nice to meet you, and Cami. ( she gestures to Cami, smiling.
"Sit, sit," Klaus says, holding a chair out for Buffy, or for Stefan. Either of them if they'd like. )

He holds the door open for Buffy as they head into the newly remodeled Rosseau's, taking in the polished bar and decor with a nod.]
You'd never guess that this place was blown up a few months ago.
[Benefits of witches being involved, he supposes.]

( She does wonder, as most would when their dads are garbage if this is a strategic dad move on his part, but how would she know? )

You'll make me a diagram if I need one?
( Buffy approaches the table with Stefan. Klaus stands from his chair, and greets the erstwhile slayer and his old friend.
"Stefan!," he says, coming around the chair. "And this must be Buffy, the vampire slayer." )
Either of them if they'd like. )
