But that doesn't mean, occasionally, she doesn't try. It's her last day before she goes back to work, Dean's asleep in her bedroom and she stole his henley before sneaking into the kitchen to do the one thing she can (sometimes) make: pancakes.
She's got three on the griddle when she feels hands find her hips and lips find her neck and she smiles as she leans back into him.]

She has a best friend and she has a man pre-determined to be her fiancé and she has a brother, but they don't tell her things. She sees the best friend and the fiancé swapping secrets in corners and having mixed conversations that she isn't invited to. There's her brother having conversations with her mother, crafting him to be the ideal child, the expected child, not the bonus twin saddled with the miasma of nightmares.
She tries not to let that bother her. She's not very good at it, but she tries. She's seventeen. It's not like she has a choice.
She's supposed to be spending the evening with David. They're supposed to be having a "date." He loves her, she knows this. She can see it in the way he protects or will snipe back at her parents if given the opportunity. But it's not a love that's real. She can't really judge him though. She's not in love with him either. But she's willing to cling to him if it means she'll have a partner she can trust, and not be forced onto her parents' darling of the week.
David promises he'll continue to protect her. He doesn't promise that he'll be on time for their dates.
He was supposed to help his parents with a ritual, and then meet her for dinner. He did not show up for dinner, so she went looking. What she does see is David stepping out into the room, and turning to look at her with pitch-black eyes. He winks at her, oh so casually, and then disappears.
Jaqueline stares in the empty space, unsure as to what to do, but when she hears his parents stumbling towards the door, she is snapped into action. She turns and runs, heading into the Harper wing, to Sierra's room, and disappearing inside without knocking. She leans back against the door and stares back at her, unsure how to put it into words.]
( Sierra has always felt her parents overcompensate. There's something that disconnects from the other heirs (that's what they're called behind their backs, and sometimes at the dinner table) between their treatment and Sierra's. Sierra has freedom. And gifts. And, for all intents and purposes. Love. None of it feels consequential. None of it feels real. Jaqueline's harder childhood, her parents' coldness. David's parents' decisive words. Even Max's rearing. It all fits in the house she's grown up in.
But hers.
Maybe she's broken. Maybe her parents do love her. Maybe they are the odd ones out.
But, for whatever reason, they all live with one another. And they're betrothed and promised across people. She's been told there was someone for her, but plans change. She's even been told she can choose for herself one day.
